What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer occurs when the body does not repair damage to the DNA inside skin cells, allowing the cells to divide and grow uncontrollably. Skin cancer strikes more worldwide

than any other form of cancer.

What causes skin cancer?

Almost 90% of skin cancer cases are caused by an overexposure of UV radiation. While UV radiation is the primary environmental cause in skin cancer, other factors may include; smoking, HPV, genetic syndromes, ionizing radiation, or the use of some medications.

Where do skin cancers appear most commonly on the body?

Skin cancer is commonly seen in the scalp, neck, lips, reproductive organs, ears, feet and the decollete area.

What are the symptoms of skin cancer?

The main symptoms of skin cancer are moles and freckles on the body. The rapid growth, discoloration and itching of moles require medical attention. And also non-healing, long-lasting, itchy, painful wounds and acnes on the skin can carry the risk of skin cancer.

How is skin cancer diagnosed?

When examining the melanoma, five important points are taken into consideration.

These;

  • asymmetry,
  • limits,
  • color,
  • diameter and time of development.

If you have irregular borders, varying colors and a diameter greater than 6 mm, it should be biopsied to be tested for melanoma.

What age does skin cancer occur?

While skin cancer is more common in people older than 50 years old, it can be also seen at the age of 20 years old.

Does skin cancer cause itching or pain?

Pain, bleeding or itching  are the most important symptoms of skin cancer.

Is skin cancer contagious?

Cancer types are not contagious. Skin cancer is also not contagious.

Is skin cancer fatal?

If melanoma is recognised and treated early, it is almost always curable. But if it is not, the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat and can be fatal.

Is skin cancer treatment possible?

Treatment of skin cancers is possible through various application methods. The visual acuity of skin cancers is more important than other types of cancer. It is seen that in the early diagnosis of skin cancers, results are obtained with minimum side effects after treatment. Recurrence of cancer is prevented with removing cancerous tissue during the treatment.

How is skin cancer treated?

For every treatment option, prevention is always the best form of treatment. It is necessary to know the importance of skin care at a young age in order to prevent melanoma.

Nonmelanoma skin cancer is treated by curettage, Mohs surgery, cryotherapy, or laser therapy. Diagnosis is usually suspected in older, fair-skinned individuals with scaly, indurated lesions on sun exposed areas, primarily on the head and neck.
